Trial Begins for Ross Ulbricht, Accused of Founding the Original Silk Road
NEW YORK (InsideBitcoins) – About a dozen supporters of Ross William Ulbricht, the man accused of running the original Silk Road, gathered in front of Manhattan federal court this morning. Ulbricht stands trial today for charges of money laundering, computer hacking, narcotic trafficking, and trafficking in false identification documents. Should he be found guilty, he could be facing up to a life in prison.
Silk Road was an anonymous and hidden website that allowed users to buy practically anything utilizing bitcoin as the currency of choice. A user could access the site, buy marijuana, and pay the seller all from the site. It all started in early 2011 and while it wasn’t the first to sell drugs online, it quickly became the largest.
